Introduction To Glutathione
Sep 15, 2025| Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine, containing a sulfhydryl group. It exhibits antioxidant and integrative detoxification properties. The sulfhydryl group on cysteine is the active group of glutathione (hence, glutathione is often abbreviated as G-SH). It readily binds to certain drugs (such as paracetamol) and toxins (such as free radicals, iodoacetic acid, mustard gas, and heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic), thus exerting integrative detoxification effects. Therefore, glutathione (especially in liver cells) can participate in biotransformations, converting harmful toxins into harmless substances for excretion. Glutathione also helps maintain normal immune system function.
